Ever since Bartolomeu Diaz was the first European to discover the Cape in 1488 in search of a sea route to Asia, truths, stories, tragedies and legends have been spun around this geographically and cartographically striking point.
The Cape of Storms in South Africa - Diaz was caught in a storm here and named the Cape "Cape of Storms". "Southernmost point of Africa" and "where the two oceans meet" are other common, albeit false, attributes attached to the Cape of Good Hope and neighboring Cape Point. Of course, both apply to Cape Agulhas, 140 km to the south-east, but few people here are interested in that, because even the first seafarers referred to this cape as the turning point. Once they had rounded the rocky Cape of Good Hope, which was often shrouded in fog and prone to storms, they had made it.
