In 1790, this part of the coast was discovered by the captain of a ship of the Dutch East Asiatic Company. The exact origin of the name Paternoster remains a bit of a mystery, as various rumors circulate about it. It is likely that it has something to do with the first pastor here, "our father". Today, Paternoster is an idyllic vacation resort with white plastered houses, beautiful beaches, nice stores and restaurants and around 1,300 inhabitants, 1,150 of whom are Khoi who have been fishing on the coast for generations.
Fortunately, Paternoster has long since created a second economic mainstay: Today, tourism predominates here, albeit in a rather gentler form. Great care is taken to ensure that the historic houses retain their character, that new houses are kept small and white and that no large hotels are built here. On a walk along the beach, you can watch fishermen hauling in their nets in a laborious and old-fashioned way. They are older men, the youth has already migrated to the cities. One reason for this is the internationally limited catch.
