Just under an hour's drive northwest of Cape Town, easily accessible via the R27, lies the historic West Coast town of Darling, not far from the Atlantic coast between vineyards and golden wheat fields. The small town was founded in 1853 and named after the Lieutenant-Governor of the Cape Province. The southernmost battle of the Anglo-Burian War took place in the area, and a monument still commemorates the Burian heroes who fought their way here. The first Merino sheep were released in Darling, thanks to a nautical error. This marked the beginning of sheep farming in the Northern Cape. Today, cattle are also kept here and wine is grown.
Even so, the town is lovely to look at with its small houses, the numerous cafés, the tranquil hustle and bustle on the main street and the 31 murals along Akkerboom Lane. The famous Pieter Dirk Uys also settled here 15 years ago. The old Darling train station became the cult theater: "Evita Se Perron", from whose stage he not only stimulates the laughter muscles of his large fan base, but also encourages political reflection.
