Cape Town International Airport is an international airport in Cape Town, South Africa. It is the second largest airport in South Africa and is located 22 kilometers east of Cape Town. It serves as a hub for South African Airways and is the tourist gateway to South Africa. 22 airlines have Cape Town International on their flight schedules, including Lufthansa (Frankfurt), British Airways, KLM, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates and home carrier South African Airways. CTIA is operated by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), which also operates other major airports in the country.
With around 4.3 million passengers per year, Cape Town's airport is significantly smaller than Johannesburg's (approx. 11 million passengers) and would be in the middle category in Germany (e.g. Hanover). In South Africa, however, it is the second largest airport, ahead of Durban (2.1 million passengers), and its capacity is being further expanded.
Cape Town Airport is located approx. 23 km from the city center and is connected to it via the N2 freeway. It takes about 30 minutes by car to cover the distance, but this can extend to 1 hour during rush hour.
