The fishing industry began to establish itself around 1800, and the railroad connection was added in 1883. The small town, which stretches along a narrow strip of land between the sea and the mountains, was founded in the 17th century by a handful of stranded sailors. Kalk Bay became famous for its kilns, in which building material was fired from shell limestone for the Dutch East India Company. This is, of course, where it got its name. Later, at the beginning of the 19th century, Kalk Bay developed more and more into a fishing port, which is still of great importance today.
You should not miss out on a visit to the harbor of Kalk Bay. The harbor is the attraction in Kalk Bay. You can look over the fishermen's shoulders as they return to the sheltered harbor and unload their catch. When the colorful fishing boats enter the harbor (usually at early lunchtime), you can watch the fishermen show off their catch. Fish fly to the shore and banknotes do the same in the opposite direction. The buyers often have the fish gutted and prepared on land.
