Hoerikwaggo, the "sea mountain", is what the first inhabitants of the Cape called Table Mountain.
Ever since the first sailors sailed around the Cape of Good Hope, the 1,086 m high Table Mountain has been a landmark that could be seen for over 100 km in good weather.
Today, it is as famous as the Sugar Loaf Mountain, the Empire State Building or the Eiffel Tower and was voted one of the "New 7 Wonders of Nature" in a worldwide survey of over 440 candidates, together with the Amazon, Halong Bay and the Iguazú Falls, for example. The over 500-metre steep sandstone wall forms a striking end to Cape Town's City Bowl. Below it, the mountain gradually tapers down to the harbor.
Most people will prefer to take the expensive but much more comfortable cable car up the mountain. The 1,224 m ascent takes about 7 minutes, during which time the gondola rotates 360°. This means you don't have to pay attention to which window you are standing at. The new gondolas were manufactured in Switzerland.
