Long Street, which is over 300 years old and has some beautifully restored Victorian houses with wrought-iron balcony railings, is home to junk and antique stores, second-hand bookshops, fashion designers and, above all, restaurants, cafés, pubs and clubs. In addition, many backpacker accommodations and other hotels have settled around the street.
Long Street was once 3.8 km long (now approx. 3.2 km) and stretched all the way to the water. The interesting section of this street is between Wale Street and Buitensingel. Two mosques, the Hanafee Mosque and the Palm Tree Mosque, are located on the street. Cape Town's first retail store opened in Long Street in 1809 and the street developed into a street of small craftsmen and traders until 1900.
It was also the nucleus and later the center of South Africa's jazz scene. The extension of Long Street to the south is Kloof Street, where you can also find nice restaurants, as well as residential outlets and boutiques further up.
