Cape Town is an old city by African standards, which is particularly evident in the buildings that are several centuries old with modern high-rises. The city center described here is also referred to by the locals as the "City Bowl", as it is nestled between Signal Hill, Lion's Head and Table Mountain as if in a bowl. The South African parliament is located in Plein Street, and is the seat of government for six months in the year. The Western Cape provincial government and City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality also have their head offices in the Cape Town CBD.&
Cape Town's current main street, the Heerengracht, which leads directly from the harbor to the foot of Table Mountain at the luxurious Mount Nelson Hotel, serves as a landmark. It first changes its name to Adderley Street and later to Government Avenue, which leads through the Company's Garden.
Heerengracht and Adderley Street together with the surrounding area form Cape Town's old business center with stores, administrative buildings, banks, the main post office (Parliament St. entrance), the railroad station and several sights. Adderley Street is Cape Town's commercial center with many stores, administrative buildings, banks, the main post office and several sights.
